Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 8, 2026
The short version
You can use the thirty day path without an account, and if you do, nothing you write is sent to us. If you make an account, what you write is backed up to that account so a lost phone does not lose it, and it is only ever given back to you.
Photographs you add to the app never leave your phone. We do not sell your information, we do not advertise, we do not use anything you write to train any model, and we never take payment details.
You can ask us to delete everything, at any time, by writing to legal@alanijonesfoundation.org.
1. Who we are
Alani Jones Foundation operates this website and the Alani app. In this policy, "we" and "the Foundation" mean Alani Jones Foundation, and we are the organization responsible for the information described here.
Because this product is about pregnancy and infant loss, most of what we hold is information about your health and your child. There is a separate Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy that covers that category specifically, and it applies alongside this one.
2. Using Alani without an account
The thirty day path, the journal, the tone you pick for a day and the garden all work with no account at all. In that state the app does not send us your writing, your answers or your child's name. It downloads the readings and otherwise runs on your phone.
The app also schedules its daily reminders on the phone itself. The wording of those reminders is not sent anywhere.
3. What stays on your phone even after you sign in
- Photographs. Every photograph you add, to the garden or to a day, is a file in the app's own storage. We never receive the image. When a garden entry syncs, all that travels is a true or false saying that a photograph exists.
- Voice notes. If you record a journal entry instead of typing it, the recording is a file in the app's own storage. We never receive it. When your journal is backed up, what travels is the words you typed and never the audio: a recording of your own voice saying your baby's name is the most identifying thing this app could hold, and it does not leave the phone. That has a cost we would rather state than hide, and the app states it beside the record button: if you lose the phone you lose the recordings, where you would not lose the writing.
- Drafts. Writing you have started but not finished is saved on the phone as you type and is not sent to us.
- People you have blocked. Your block list is kept on that phone. We are not told who you blocked, and the block does not follow you to another device.
- Your reminder schedule. Set and kept on the phone.
4. What we collect when you make an account
An account is what makes a backup, a partner link and the peer feed possible. It means:
- Who you are. Your email address, a display name, your role in the household, your time zone, and when you were last active.
- About your loss. Your baby's name and whether you chose to name them, the date of the loss, how far along you were, the type of loss, and a due date if you gave one.
- What you write. For each day you complete, the reflection you wrote, the word you picked for the day, and whether you went outside.
- Check-ins. Your answers to the loneliness question at the start and end of the path.
- The peer feed. Posts and replies you write, your display name on them, and which posts you reacted to.
- Your partner link. If you invite someone, the code and the fact you two are linked. A reflection reaches them only when you choose to share that one.
- Your garden. The note on an entry, and whether it has a photograph.
- A shipping address, if you ask us to send you something.
- A push token, if you turn notifications on, so a message can reach your phone.
- An access record. When someone at the Foundation reaches records, we log that it happened, with the time and the network address. We do not log what was written.
5. What happens if you tell us you feel completely alone
The check-in asks how alone you feel, on a scale. If you give the answer at the very top of that scale, the app sends an email to the Foundation so that a person knows. That email contains your email address, your baby's name and the score. It does not contain anything you wrote in your journal.
You should know two things about this. It is not an emergency service and nobody is watching for it around the clock. And it is the only place in the app where an answer you give causes a message about you to be sent to a person. If you are in danger now, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911.
6. What you tell us through this website
- Support and comfort box requests. Your name, email, phone number, your relationship to the baby, the type and date of the loss, how you would like to be reached, where you heard about us, your shipping address and sizes, your baby's name, and anything else you write in the form.
- Volunteer applications. Your contact details, your background, and for clinicians the credentials you give us, which include a license number.
- Surveys. Your written answers about how you were doing before and after, what helped, and what you wish had been included.
- Resource submissions and messages, including whatever you write in them.
7. What we never collect
- Payment or card details. Donations are taken by Zeffy on their own pages. Nothing about a card reaches us.
- Your photographs. See above. They stay on the phone.
- Your precise location. The app does not ask for it and does not use it.
- Your contacts, calendar or camera roll at large. The app opens the photo picker when you tap to add a photograph and receives only the picture you choose.
- Anything from your microphone that you did not record on purpose. The app can record a journal entry in your own voice, and it asks for the microphone the first time you press record. Nothing is ever recorded in the background, and the recording is a file on your phone that never reaches us. See above.
- Advertising identifiers. There is no advertising in Alani and no tracking for it.
We do not sell your information and we do not share it for anyone's advertising. We do not use what you write to train artificial intelligence, ours or anyone else's.
8. Who else handles your information
These are the companies that hold or move some part of it in order for Alani to work. There are no others.
- Clerk holds accounts and sign-in, including your email address.
- Neon hosts the database the rest of it sits in.
- Vercel runs this website and the app's server.
- Brevo sends our email, so an address we write to passes through them.
- Expo, Apple and Google deliver push notifications. A notification says that something is waiting, never a copy of what somebody wrote.
- PostHog and Umami count visits to this website. Neither runs in the app.
- Zeffy takes donations on their own pages, under their own policy.
We also give information out when the law requires it, and we would tell you unless we were forbidden from doing so.
Hospitals and other organizations that hand out Alani do not have access to anything about you. There is no partner login and no report about you that anyone can pull.
9. The peer feed is visible to other parents
Anything you post to the peer feed can be read by other people using Alani, under the display name you chose. Treat it as public. Your email address is never shown there, and your journal is never posted anywhere.
You can delete your own posts and replies. A copy may remain in a backup for a while, and somebody may already have read it.
10. Analytics on this website
We count page visits so we know which pages people find. Analytics do not run inside the app at all. On this website we have turned off session recording and automatic capture of what you click, and we strip anything after the question mark in a web address before it is recorded.
The Cookie Policy explains what is set and how to refuse it.
11. How long we keep it
Your account and what is in it are kept while your account exists. Requests you send through this website are kept while we are still acting on them and for our records afterward. Access records are kept so that we can tell who looked at what.
When you ask us to delete your information, we delete it, other than the few things we are required to keep. Backups roll off on their own schedule, so a copy can persist there for a short period after that.
12. Your choices
You can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you, and give you a copy
- correct something that is wrong
- delete your account and everything in it
- stop sending you email, which you can also do from any email we send
Write to legal@alanijonesfoundation.org. We will ask you enough to be confident it is really you, and then do it. We do not charge for this and we will not treat you differently for asking.
Depending on where you live you may have further rights, including under the Washington My Health My Data Act, which is covered in the Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy. You can also turn notifications off in your phone's settings at any time, and delete the app, which removes everything the app kept on that phone.
13. How we protect it
Traffic to us is encrypted, the database is reached over a verified encrypted connection, and access by anyone at the Foundation is logged. Access is limited to the people who need it to do the work.
We are not going to tell you it cannot go wrong. No system is beyond reach, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. If information about you were exposed, we would tell you.
14. Children
Alani is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If you believe a child has given us information, write to legal@alanijonesfoundation.org and we will delete it.
15. Where your information is handled
The Foundation is in the United States and your information is handled here. If you are writing to us from elsewhere, that is where it goes.
16. Changes to this policy
If we change this, we will change the date at the top. If the change affects what happens to what you have written, we will tell you rather than leave you to notice.
17. Contact
Write to legal@alanijonesfoundation.org. A person reads it.
